Six desks across the city day

Each desk at Pulse Vault Wave owns a beat, a checking protocol, and a place in the morning and evening waves. Desks do not compete for front-page placement; they file into the index in numerical order unless verified urgency requires a reorder.

Desk editors sit along the long table on the second floor of 35 Kerbau Road. They share proof trays, pigeonhole slots, and a single corrections log. Cross-desk stories — a road closure affecting a school gate, for instance — are co-signed before publication.

Understanding desk structure helps readers route correction reports and source tips to the right editor. Each desk maintains its own source calendar, but all desks follow the same five-step verification sequence published on How We Check.

How desks are assigned

A desk is not a reporter pool but an editorial responsibility zone. Each desk editor maintains source relationships, document subscriptions, and a calendar of predictable municipal cycles — town council meetings, school term starts, festival preparations. When an item arrives without a clear desk, the morning coordinator assigns it based on primary subject matter, not perceived reader interest.

Desk boundaries are published here so readers know who to contact for corrections. Email [email protected] with the desk number in the subject line; messages are routed internally within one business day.

Desk editors rotate section-editor duty on a monthly schedule. The section editor holds final sign-off authority but does not override a desk hold without documented reason. This separation keeps verification discipline consistent across beats.

Stepped list

The six desks in detail

  1. Neighbourhood and municipal affairs

Covers town council notices, void-deck bookings, lift maintenance schedules, and block-level disputes that appear in public minutes. Sources include town council websites, OneService reports, and on-record interviews with grassroots leaders. The desk publishes correction notices within four hours of verified error.

  2. Transport and streets

Monitors LTA advisories, bus service changes, MRT station access works, and pedestrian route closures. On-site checks happen during daylight; night works are covered only when official notices require resident notification. The desk does not predict journey times.

  3. Schools and young people

Tracks MOE releases, school-level announcements, youth programme schedules, and exam-period logistics. Student names and photographs are excluded unless the subject is a public award with consent on record. Playground rumour is never published.

  4. Small business and hawker trade

Reports hawker centre tenancy changes, NEA licensing updates, and small-shop handovers in covered markets. Commercial endorsement is excluded; trade desk copy names the verifying agency and document reference.

  5. Environment and green spaces

Matches NParks and PUB notices to on-site conditions for park closures, tree works, and drainage projects. Photographs include date and location in the caption. Speculation about environmental impact beyond the official notice is not published.

  6. Culture, faith and community life

Verifies festival timings, temple and church notices, and community-led events with organisers on the record. Embargo requests are honoured; schedule changes trigger a fix-notice in the back-issue room.

Detail

Desk handover between waves

At 08:15 SGT each desk editor submits a morning summary card: items filed, items held for verification, and items deferred to the evening wave. The section editor reviews cards against the master index before the morning file publishes at 08:30. At 17:30, desks submit evening cards with the same fields plus any correction notices issued during the day.

Cross-desk items require co-signature from both desk editors and the section editor. If a transport closure affects a school gate, Desk 02 and Desk 03 both attach source lists before the piece enters either wave. This prevents single-desk blind spots on compound stories.

Summary cards are archived in the print room for twelve months. They are not published but are available to readers conducting research into our editorial process upon written request to [email protected].

Contacting a desk

Email [email protected] with the desk number and article reference. Visit Talk to Us for office hours and directions. Read How We Check for the verification protocol shared across all desks.

Desk editors also maintain public source calendars listing predictable publication cycles — town council meeting dates, exam weeks, major festival eves — so readers know when to expect filings without guessing from silence.

New desk editors shadow an incumbent for two weeks before solo sign-off authority. Shadowing includes proof marking practice, corrections register orientation, and print room filing drills. This onboarding standard applies uniformly regardless of prior journalism experience elsewhere.

Each desk publishes a quarterly source list summary — agencies contacted, document types reviewed, and held-item statistics — as part of our public method commitment. Summaries appear on this page when released.

Every desk files into the same index — no beat outranks another.
